Outdoor Slabs Need a Different System
Patio and outdoor concrete coatings are a separate job from garage floors, even though the slabs look similar. A back patio in Arlington gets full summer sun, rain, standing water after storms, and temperatures swinging from winter freezes to 100-degree afternoons. A standard epoxy floor, which can yellow and chalk in UV light, is not built for that. Outdoor work calls for UV-stable chemistry, a texture that is safe when wet, and realistic expectations about how outdoor concrete moves.
Sun is the main enemy
HomeGuide rates epoxy's UV resistance as poor to fair and polyaspartic's as excellent. On an uncovered patio, that difference shows up quickly as a yellow, faded or chalky surface. For outdoor slabs we use polyaspartic systems, often with a flake broadcast, or for owners who want a natural look, a penetrating or polyurethane sealer that protects the concrete without a film that can fade.
Heat and surface temperature
Concrete in direct sun gets much hotter than the air on a DFW summer afternoon, and coatings set faster on a hot slab. We schedule outdoor coating for the early morning or cooler days, keep batches small, and check surface temperature against the product's limits before we start. Rain in the forecast also moves the schedule, since a fresh coating needs to stay dry while it cures.
Grip when wet
Patios get wet from rain, sprinklers, hoses and pool splash. A glossy smooth coating outdoors is a slip hazard, so outdoor systems get texture: a full flake broadcast, an anti-slip aggregate in the topcoat, or both. Around pools and steps we lean toward more texture, not less.
Cracks, joints and clay soil
Outdoor slabs in Arlington sit on the same expansive clay that can move house foundations, and thin, unloaded patio slabs often crack and shift. We fill and grind stable cracks, keep control joints open where the slab needs to move, and are honest about slabs that have heaved or sunk enough that a coating will not fix the real problem. A coating can make a sound slab look new; it cannot level one that has dropped.
Coating or sealer?
HomeGuide's concrete sealing guide recommends polyurethane or a penetrating sealer for a matte patio finish, and epoxy-grade systems for high-traffic patios. In practice: a sealer is the lower-cost option that keeps concrete looking like concrete and needs periodic reapplication; a polyaspartic flake system costs more but gives a finished, colored, textured surface. We price both if you are unsure.
Areas we coat
Back patios and covered patios, front porches and entry steps, walkways, pool-adjacent slabs where the material is suited to the pool deck, and the apron where the driveway meets the garage. For driveways we usually recommend sealing over a coating, since vehicles, sun and hot tires on a driveway are hard on any film-forming system.
What This Covers
Outdoor systems are chosen for sun exposure, traffic and how the slab is used.
Polyaspartic flake patios
UV-stable, textured, colored finish for patios and porches.
Clear and penetrating sealers
Protection that keeps the natural concrete look.
Anti-slip finishes
Added texture for steps, wet areas and around pools.
Crack and joint work
Stable cracks filled and ground; control joints kept functional.

How It Works
1. Assess the slab
We check sun exposure, cracks, drainage, heaving and any old sealers.
2. Prepare
The surface is cleaned and ground; stable cracks are filled and ground flush.
3. Coat or seal
Applied in the cooler part of the day with texture built in.
4. Cure
The slab is kept dry and off-limits for the written cure time.

Patio & Outdoor Concrete Coatings Questions
Can you put epoxy on an outdoor patio?
Standard epoxy is a poor choice in direct sun because it can yellow and chalk. For uncovered patios we use UV-stable polyaspartic systems or sealers instead; epoxy can work under a fully covered patio.
How much does it cost to coat a patio in Arlington?
HomeGuide lists epoxy patio coatings at about $4 to $10 per square foot and polyaspartic at $4 to $9, or roughly $750 to $2,250 for a 250-square-foot patio. Sealers cost less. We give a written price after measuring.
Will a coating fix my cracked patio?
It can cover stable, repaired cracks. It will not fix a slab that has heaved or sunk on the clay soil, and active cracks can come back through. We tell you which you have at the estimate.
Is a coated patio slippery?
Not when it is built for outdoor use. We add texture with flakes or an anti-slip aggregate so the surface grips when wet.
