Giving Bedford's Older Concrete a Second Life
Epoxy flooring in Bedford is mostly a story about mature concrete. The city's fastest growth happened between 1960 and 1990, when the population roughly doubled each decade, from 2,706 to 43,762. A large share of Bedford's garages were poured during those thirty years, and a floor that age has usually picked up cracks, oil stains, old paint and the odd patch. Those slabs can take a coating well, but only if the preparation is done right.
What decades of use do to a garage slab
Concrete keeps changing long after it is poured. Over time you often see:
- Shrinkage and settlement cracks running across the floor
- Oil and transmission fluid soaked deep into the surface
- Flaking paint or a cheap DIY coating that has started to peel
- Pitting near the garage door where water collects
- A rough, worn area where cars have parked for years
How we prepare an older Bedford floor
We begin with diamond grinding, not acid etching. Grinding removes old coatings and contamination and leaves a profile the primer can bite into. Next we clean out cracks and fill them with a repair compound, degrease stained spots, and patch pitted areas near the door. Only then does the base coat go down. On older floors, this prep step is the difference between a coating that lasts and one that peels in the tire tracks within a year or two.
Systems that suit Bedford homes
For most Bedford garages we recommend either a full-broadcast epoxy flake floor or a polyaspartic floor coating. Flake does a good job of disguising repaired cracks, which matters on an older slab where some repair lines will always be faintly visible. Polyaspartic cures much faster than standard epoxy and resists UV yellowing, so it is a good fit if your garage door faces the afternoon sun or you need the car back inside sooner. Some homeowners also choose metallic epoxy for a converted garage gym, home office or game room.
Patios and outdoor slabs
The same decades that aged your garage also aged the back patio. Our patio and outdoor concrete coatings use UV-stable products and a textured finish so the surface is not slick when wet. They can cover stains and minor surface wear on an older patio, though a slab that has heaved or broken apart needs concrete work first.
Owners, renters and smaller households
Bedford is close to an even split: 50.6% of housing units are owner-occupied, per Census estimates, and the median owner-occupied home is valued at $350,700. The city's median age was 40.1 at the 2020 census, and about a third of households are one person living alone. For many of these owners, the goal is a garage that is easy to sweep, does not track dust into the house and is less slippery than bare concrete. We are happy to talk through texture options that add grip without making the floor hard to clean.
Shops and commercial spaces
Bedford's largest employers include Texas Health Resources and Carter BloodCare, and the city sits along State Highway 121 and State Highway 183. Medical offices, labs, auto shops and storage rooms along those corridors all benefit from seamless, chemical-resistant floors. Our commercial and warehouse floor epoxy can include cove base, safety striping and slip-resistant texture where required by your facility.

Bedford Facts That Shape the Job
- Thirty years of rapid building. Bedford's population grew 271.4% in the 1960s, 107.2% in the 1970s and 110.2% in the 1980s, reaching 43,762 in 1990. Growth slowed sharply after 2000, so much of the housing stock is decades old.
- Near-even owner and renter split. About 50.6% of Bedford housing units are owner-occupied, the median owner-occupied value is $350,700, and the median gross rent is $1,502 (Census ACS, 2020 to 2024).
- Smaller, older households. At the 2020 census Bedford had a median age of 40.1. Of its 21,693 households, 33.1% were single-person households and 12.1% were people 65 or older living alone.
- Home rule since 1966. Bedford adopted its Home Rule Charter on September 24, 1966 and runs under a council-manager government. The city covers about 10 square miles in northeastern Tarrant County.
- Boys Ranch Lake restoration. In June 2026, the City of Bedford, Texas Parks and Wildlife and volunteers planted 370 native aquatic plants at Boys Ranch Lake, part of a phased restoration that began with fish stocking in fall 2025.

Bedford Questions
My Bedford garage floor has cracks. Will they show through the coating?
We fill and grind cracks before coating, which makes them far less noticeable, but a repaired crack can still show faintly, and if the slab keeps moving a crack can reappear. A flake floor hides repair lines better than a solid or metallic finish, which is why we often recommend it for older slabs.
There is old paint on my garage floor. Do you have to remove it?
Yes. New coatings bond to clean concrete, not to old paint that may already be loose. We grind off old paint and sealers as part of the prep, and that work is listed as its own line on your quote.
Is polyaspartic or epoxy better for a Bedford garage?
Both work. Epoxy is a strong, cost-effective base. Polyaspartic cures faster and resists UV yellowing better, so it is often used as a topcoat or as the whole system for garages that face the sun. We explain the trade-offs and price both options if you want to compare.
Can you make the floor less slippery for an older parent?
Yes. We can add a fine anti-slip aggregate to the topcoat or use a heavier flake texture. Any coating can be slippery under water or oil, but added texture gives noticeably better footing than smooth concrete or a glossy finish without grip.
