A Floor That Looks Poured, Because It Is

Metallic epoxy floors are the decorative end of floor coatings. Metallic pigments are mixed into a clear epoxy, the mix is poured over a base coat, and the installer moves it with rollers, brushes and sprayers while it is wet. The pigment drifts and swirls into patterns that look like marble, lava, water or brushed metal, with a depth that changes as you walk across the room. No two floors match, and that is the point.

Where metallic makes sense

Metallic suits converted garages, game rooms, home gyms, man caves, home bars and small retail or salon spaces, and showpiece garages for a collector car: rooms where looks come first and traffic is moderate. For a working garage that takes daily wet tires, oil and dragged tools, a flake floor is usually the more practical choice, and we will say so.

Honest trade-offs

A metallic floor is glossy and smooth, which means it shows scratches, dust and footprints more than a flake floor, and it is slick when wet unless an anti-slip additive goes in the topcoat. It is also very sensitive to the surface underneath. Any crack, patch or low spot can show through a thin metallic layer, so slab prep and repair have to be cleaner than for other systems. On North Texas clay-soil slabs, an active crack may come back as a line across the design. We look hard at the slab before recommending metallic.

Heat and the pour

Metallic work depends on working time: the installer needs the epoxy to stay fluid long enough to move the pigments into the design. Heat cuts that time short. In summer we work in conditioned rooms where we can, schedule garages for early in the day, and plan the pour so the whole floor is worked while it is still wet, which avoids seams and visible stopping points.

Choosing colors and a look

Metallic colors range from silvers, charcoals and copper to blues, greens and pearl whites, and many floors blend two or three. The same colors can look calm or dramatic depending on how they are worked. We bring sample boards and photos of the finish styles and talk through what you want the room to feel like, then agree on colors and technique in writing before the pour.

Protecting the finish

Metallic epoxy, like all epoxy, can amber in direct sunlight, so rooms with big sunny windows or a garage that sits open to the afternoon need a UV-stable topcoat. A clear polyurethane or polyaspartic topcoat also takes the scratches that would otherwise land in the design layer, and a satin finish hides wear better than full gloss.

Care

Sweep or dust-mop often, since grit is what scratches a glossy floor. Use a pH-neutral cleaner and a soft mop, put felt pads under furniture and gym equipment, and use mats under heavy machines.

How It Works

1. Plan the look

We review colors and finish styles and confirm the design in writing.

2. Prepare the slab

Grinding and patching are done to a finer standard so nothing shows through.

3. Pour and work

Base coat, then the metallic layer poured and moved into the design while wet.

4. Seal

A clear topcoat protects the design; we leave cure and care instructions.

Metallic Epoxy Floors Questions

How much does a metallic epoxy floor cost?

This Old House lists metallic epoxy at about $5 to $12 per square foot; ArmorGarage, which sells coatings, puts professional metallic installs higher, at $9 to $15. It costs more than flake or solid-color systems. We price your room after seeing the slab.

Is metallic epoxy good for a garage?

It can be for a showpiece garage, but for daily parking a flake floor hides dirt and wear better and has more grip. Metallic shows scratches and is slick when wet without an additive.

Can metallic epoxy go over cracked concrete?

Only after the cracks are repaired, and even then a slab that keeps moving can show a line through the design later. We assess the cracks before recommending metallic.

Will my metallic floor look like the photos?

It will follow the colors and style you choose, but every metallic floor is unique because the pigment moves by hand. We agree on colors and technique in writing before the pour.
